Tiger Rag, Schwarzer Panther & Co.

Swing and jazz in 1930s Germany were taboo in the eyes of those in power - inviting fans and musicians to find loopholes and disguises: The Andrews Sisters' Jewish “Joseph Joseph” became “Sie will nicht Blumen und nicht Schokolade” (“She doesn’t want flowers and she doesn’t want chocolate”) with a German translation, and an anthem for the swing kids, which appeared on vinyl in seven different editions, was born. The “Tiger Rag” was mirrored in the re-imagined “Schwarzer Panther” (“Black Panther”). An English chant simply became an “American chorus” at the start of the war, as the U.S. remained neutral until December 1941.

“Nightclubfinger” and “Swing Heil” - misunderstood buzzwords and the handling of prohibitions during the war illuminate the imagination and versatility of the swing lovers who pursued their beloved music and the freedom they felt with it. In this musical conversation including pictures and sounds from the “Hot-Koffer”, the suitcase gramophone, the original sound of that era is presentet, all in the spirit of “Censorship is there to be crapped on”.

Speaker

“Record Entertainer” Stephan Wuthe from Berlin has been collecting shellac records, old photos, everything about swing and dance in Berlin from the 20s to the 40s for over 40 years.

The Shim Sham is the most well known vintage jazz solo choreography. It is very often danced to the song “‘Tain’t What You Do (It’s the Way That You Do It)” in the version of Jimmy Lunceford - but isn’t usually danced until the end of the song. Here you will learn how Frankie Manning and his son Chazz Young danced the entire song.

As a prerequisite for this workshop you have to know the “classic” Shim Sham. To allow you to participate without knowing the Shim Sham yet, we offer you an online course right here.

1. Step-by-step explanation

2. Slow tempo

3. Medium tempo

4. Fast tempo
